Three sizes cover nearly every powersports application, and picking wrong means a rivet that spins loose or won't seat. Here's how to get it right.
Measure the hole, not the old rivet
Old rivets deform, so measure the panel hole diameter with calipers or a drill bit as a gauge (a bit that just slips through tells you the size).
The three sizes
- 6mm (¼") — smaller trim pieces, some dirt bike number plates and inner fender liners.
- 8mm (5/16") — the powersports standard. Fenders, side panels, footwells, and bed panels on most Polaris, Honda, Can-Am, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Arctic Cat machines use 8mm. If you're unsure, it's almost certainly this one.
- 10mm (3/8") — heavier structural panels and some automotive bumper applications.
Panel thickness matters too
The standard 8mm rivet is 21mm long and grips panels from roughly 2mm to 6mm combined thickness — which covers a plastic panel against a metal frame tab or two plastic panels sandwiched. Doubled-up thick panels may need a longer-reach rivet.
