Snowmobiles and jet skis destroy plastic fasteners faster than any other machine class — sleds through freeze-thaw embrittlement, PWC through UV and salt. Here's what their panels use, what fails, and how to stock up smart.
Snowmobiles: what the hood and panels use
Ski-Doo, Polaris, Arctic Cat, and Yamaha sleds all use 8mm nylon expansion rivets on hood vents, side panels, belly pans, and windshield trim. BRP part 293150089 (shared across Ski-Doo, Sea-Doo, and Can-Am) and Arctic Cat 8413-100 are the common OEM numbers — both cross to the standard 8mm push rivet.
Why sled rivets fail
Nylon gets brittle below freezing. Add engine-bay heat cycling on one side and −20°F wind on the other, and rivets that flex fine in summer snap during trailside panel pulls. Riders who do their own clutch and belt work go through rivets constantly — which is why serious sledders keep a bulk pack in the trailer tote.
Winter tip
Warm rivets install better. Keep your spares inside the truck, not the trailer — a room-temperature rivet seats with half the force and zero cracking risk.
Jet skis & PWC: corrosion changes the math
Sea-Doo Spark/GTI/GTX/RXP-X, Yamaha WaveRunners, and Kawasaki Ultras use the same 8mm rivet on seat trim, access panels, storage compartments, and hull liner edges. Metal fasteners corrode in salt within a season — nylon doesn't, which is why OEMs spec plastic here in the first place.
What to check each season
- Access panel rivets — the ones you remove for winterization are usually cracked by spring
- Seat and trim edges — UV kills the exposed heads first (look for chalky gray fading)
- Anything below the rub rail — replace on sight, cheap insurance against losing a panel at speed
